The new year will bring an extra day for Prince George residents to access provincial services.

On Jan. 9, the local Service BC office will begin a pilot project of opening on Saturdays.

Currently, the office – located at 1044 Fifth Ave. – is open Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. In the new year, it will offer Saturday service during those same hours, by appointment only. Tasks handled out the Service BC office include driver's licensing, voter registration, BC Hydro payments, lottery licences and residential tenancy information.

"This pilot project is an excellent example of how the province is cutting red tape and improving service delivery to save people time and increase convenience," said Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction Coralee Oakes, in a press release. "Providing residents with the option of booking appointments on Saturdays will offer busy residents greater access to the government services they need."

Once the test period – expected to last at least six months – ends, there is potential for the Saturday service to become permanent and expand to other communities.
