A man who led police on a chase in the West Lake area has been prohibited from driving for two years.
Erwin Gerhard Engel, 73, who had been in custody since his arrest on July 15, was also sentenced to a day in jail during a hearing this week in Prince George provincial court.
RCMP had been on the lookout for Engel after he allegedly breached a conditional sentence order the month before.
When he was seen driving on Minchin Road, off Blackwater Road southwest of the city, police tried to pull him over but Engel took off at a high speed, RCMP said at the time. Police did not pursue Engel but a short time later they found his vehicle down a long driveway off Blackwater Road and determined he fled on foot into a nearby wooded area.
Additional officers were called in, RCMP said, because Engel has been violent towards police in the past, including the use of weapons. A perimeter was established and the dog was brought in.
The dog tracked Engel to a spot about 800 metres from where his vehicle was found and he was arrested without incident.
Engel was issued the prohibition for one count each of dangerous driving and flight from a peace officer.
Engel had been serving an 18-month conditional sentence, served at home rather than in jail but with conditions, issued in February 2014, for unlawful confinement and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm from a September 2013 incident in Mackenzie.
