Shawnee Newton, left, and daughter Maria, attended Seedy Saturday at St. Michael's Church downtown Prince George Saturday morning to see what's new in the gardening world.

Despite blustery winter weather it sure felt like a bit of spring during Seedy Saturday, presented by David Douglas Botanical Garden Society and the Prince George Master Gardeners, that went ahead on Saturday at St. Michaels & All Angels Anglican Church in downtown Prince George.

There was a seed swap, seed sales and displays, information available and presentations as well as a used book for sale.

Shawnee Newton, who has had a ranch near Willow River for more than 18 years, brought daughter Maria with her to check out Seedy Saturday, an event Shawnee said she always looks forward to but hasn’t attended for several years.

“I grow a big garden – we grow most of our own food and I do save seeds,” Newton said. “Last year I saved more than I have in previous years – beans, peas, tomato, pepper seeds. I saved carrot seeds, too.”

Newton came to the event to see what’s available.

“Maybe there’s another kind of seed I can pick up or trade with somebody,” Newton said. There’s also interesting sessions to listen to.”

Newton sat in on an information session about root cellars years ago and she’s got one now.

“It’s always nice to bump into people I know who are Master Gardeners,” Newton said. “One day, when I’m not working full time, I would like to do the Master Gardener program. I drag my kids around to everything and my older daughter is here with me and she’s a ranch kid and she appreciates the work that I do and the garden I grow.”

Presentations at Seedy Saturday included Flowers, Food & Friends in the Front Yard at 9:30 a.m., presented by Owen Brown, the Value of Locally Produced Seed at 10:30 a.m. presented by Stephanie Bird and Garden as Art at noon, presented by Maureen Falkner. There was a concession provided by Cait’s Sweet Bites & Beanery including some with light fare and beverages.

Depth of Field: Films About Farming, a series of short films were shown throughout the day.

Admission was by donation.
