A section of the Heritage River Trail system is closed and is expected to remain closed throughout the  summer, according to information released by the City of Prince George on Monday.

The closure affects a 200-metre section of the trail north of the CN Rail bridge. Workers are replacing a pedestrian bridge with a pedestrian/service bridge which will allow trail access for maintenance equipment and improve safety for pedestrians.

The canoe launch parking lot of Cottonwood Island Park is closed all day Monday for maintenance.

“Spring is a busy time for our parks team,” City of Prince George parks supervisor Neil Matheson said. “We have a lot of winter clean-up to do in all our parks and trails to remove tree limbs and garbage, but this is also the start to many important projects that can only be done in the warmer months.”

Spring maintenance, including playground inspections, trail cleaning, tree planting and parking lot grading will be taking place at parks throughout the city over the coming weeks.

Some of the other park capital projects planned this year include: playground improvements, Heritage River Trail paving, sports field work at Carrie Jane Grey Park, irrigation improvements at Rainbow Park, basketball court hard surface replacement at Hammond and Strathcona Parks, and improvements to the washrooms near Exploration Place at Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park.
