Bear Lake residents will now be voting in a double by-election this spring, following the resignation of a second member of the Bear Lake Community Commission.
In February, the resignation of commissioner Sandra Child prompted the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George to appoint a chief electoral officer to conduct a by-election to fill the job. Following that meeting, commissioner Sandy McClure also resigned, leaving only three members remaining on the five-person board, according to a report to the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George board of directors.
Last week, the regional district board approved conducting both by-elections at the same time. Under the B.C. Local Government Act, the pair of by-elections must be held no later than June 6.
The Bear Lake Community Commission is made up of four locally-elected members, plus the director of the regional district's Crooked River-Parsnip electoral area, who sits as an ex-officio commissioner.
The remaining members are regional district director Pat Crook and commissioners Charlie MacDougall and Herbert Franklin.
The commission is responsible for managing the operation of local fire protection, street lighting, cemetery operations, community water services, creation facilities and the ambulance station.
The commissioners elected by by-election will serve until the next local government general election on Oct. 15, 2022.
