Seasonal flooding prompts Prince George park, trail closures

City has set up signs and barricades for affected areas

The water spring water levels are rising so the city has made the call to close some local parks and trails.

Due to rising water from the Nechako and Fraser Rivers the city has closed the Heritage River Trail from the trailhead east of the riverboat launch to Taylor Drive North of Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.

All three bridges in Cottonwood Island Park are closed, as is the road to the canoe launch. However, Parks and trails south of Taylor Drive along the Fraser River remain open.

City staff have set up signs and barricades at various park and trail locations in the area to help notify the public.

These sections of park and trail typically experience limited flooding each year during the spring freshet and, currently, river levels are measuring at their seasonal average.

The city notes that it is continuing to monitor river levels and, if necessary, may close additional sections of Cottonwood Island Park, the Heritage River Trail, and other parks along the rivers.

The public is asked to avoid the affected areas, follow park signs and be cautious at all times around the rivers.
