School District No. 57 (SD57) is set to have its last meeting of the 2022/23 school year and it will be a busy one.
Not only will the two new trustees -- Sarah Holland and Shar McCrory -- be officially sworn-in following the June 17 by-election, but the board will also have to finalize its budget for the 2023/24 school year.
Budget discussions at last month’s meeting revealed the district is facing a $2,359,303 shortfall.
The draft budget presented in the board of education’s June agenda proposes that $1,780,261 of the deficit will be met with cost reductions, while the rest will be taken out of Operating Surplus, both restricted and unrestricted.
Within that $1.7 million in cuts, $777,020 is set to be taken out of District Administration, representing a 12.18 per cent reduction.
Reductions to Instruction take up the second largest proposed cut at $690,239, but this only makes up 0.51 per cent of the total instruction budget.
The District Administration cuts are broken down into Education Administration $592,100, and Business Administration $184,920.
A budget will need to be passed on Tuesday, as the board is required to submit a balanced budget to the Minister of Education and Child Care by June 30.
The meeting takes place at 4 p.m. at the district’s Central Administration Office located at 2100 Ferry Avenue.
The full agenda for Tuesday’s meeting is now available online.
