From the $50 million the provincial government designated earlier this month for school districts to start hiring teachers immediately, $1.2 million has been allotted to School District 57.

That means between 10 to 15 new teachers will be in the classroom this year in the area school district.

This action is in response to the Supreme Court ruling to provide funding to enhance the learning environment of students in B.C.

Across the province, that means about 1,100 teachers will be hired this year.

There was a memorandum of agreement signed earlier this month between the province, the BC Public School Employers' Association and the BC Teachers' Federation that highlighted priority measures, the first step in response to the Supreme Court decision so that negotiations continue on provisions of a restored collective agreement.

"This funding is just for this school year," said Tim Bennett, School District 57 board chair.

"At the provincial level they are still negotiating what that amount of money will be for future years and I'm sure we'll be looking for additional teachers next year."

Students' education is always the priority, he added.

"Any opportunity to enhance the education of the students is a great thing," said Bennett.

"We as a district, as for most districts and most sectors, our one concern is recruitment and retention now that there is going to be 1,100 new teaching positions across the province, we want to attract and keep great staff in the district."
