A scholarship fund has been established for Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick, the Prince George soldier killed by a March 6 bomb blast while he was on duty in Afghanistan. He died several days later in hospital.

"Cpl. Darren J. Fitzpatrick was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, friend, soldier and Canadian hero," said Shawn Rice, one of the instigators of the scholarship effort. "The Kelly Road secondary school alum was the 141st Canadian soldier to be killed in Afghanistan and the first soldier raised in Prince George (he was born in Burnaby and moved here with his family as a small child) to die in combat since the Second World War."

A dinner has been scheduled for June 19 at the Civic Centre to raise funds for the bursary. Silent and live auctions will also take place.

"All proceeds go to a memorial fund which will be used to establish a scholarship to be given each year to a student from Kelly Road secondary school," Rice said. "The scholarship recipient will demonstrate an interest in a career with the Canadian Forces."

The dinner will begin with doors opening at 6:00 p.m., dinner at 7:00 p.m. and live auction at 8:00 p.m. The cost for the dinner is $50 per person or $450 for a table of 10.

To donate to the auctions, buy tickets, or for more information call Rice at 250-612-9856.
