In terms of wildfires, Prince George and northern B.C. have undoubtedly had a quieter summer season this year compared to others.

In fact, the region has only reported 43 fires as of today (July 27), according to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), burning an estimated 203 hectares

In regard to the Prince George Fire Centre, we have seen 43 fires to date for a total of 203 hectares burned in the 2020 season.

That’s a 62 per cent decrease on this same date in 2019, which saw 115 total fires and 7,555 hectares burned, and a decline of 76 per cent from 2018’s record-breaking numbers (178 fires, 57,252 hectares).

Firefighters explain scattered rain events in July across northern B.C. have mainly contributed to the significant reduction in incidents.

This month, Environment Canada say Prince George has experienced a 46 per cent precipitation rate.

BCWS adds of the 36 wildfires in the province this summer, all have occurred in the southern half of B.C., seven were lightning-caused and five have grown to more than one hectare.

There are currently no wildfires of note in the Prince George region, and all open-burning restrictions have been lifted.

To report a wildfire, you’re asked to call BCWS’ hot-line, toll-free, at 1‑800‑663‑5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks.
