A singing telegram on Valentine's Day on Monday could be a unique and surprising way to send a nice message to someone special.

Prince George residents can arrange for the telegram by booking the BeezNeez Quartet, a barbershop component of the White Spruce City Chorus chapter of the Sweet Adelines.

"We've gone to garages, restaurants, and senior residences, but the majority of visits are to workplaces and homes where we see every expression in the book, from joy and surprise to tears and embarrassment," said Marilyn Johnson, the lead singer.

She is joined by Kathy Pereira, baritone; Barb Humphreys, bass; and Sam Isabelle, tenor; who are primed and ready to sing wherever they're asked to go.

"One year we sang amidst hanging carcasses and butcher knives in a meat locker for a gentleman who worked there," Johnson said. "It was cold, but it was fine.

"Another time when we sang for someone in the courthouse, there was thunderous applause when we finished. When we looked around we realized an audience had gathered as we sang. That was a surprise for us."

On Feb. 14 the group will work from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. To book a song for your special person call 250-564-9130. The cost of $25 includes a song, flower and chocolates.

Funds raised will be used for the quartet to go to Calgary in May to participate in the Region 26 Sweet Adeline's competition.

The quartet came up with its unusual name, after months of pondering, when one of the members quipped, "That's just the bee's knees."

"It's an English expression that means something is kind of cool," Johnson said.
