This Saturday will officially be Mike Benny Day in Prince George, to honour the popular local radio personality who passed away at the age of 58 last month.

March 13 would have marked Benny's 35th year on the air in the city, Mayor Lyn Hall said, as he made the proclamation at city council on Monday.

"I think there will be a lot of stories told around a few water coolers in the city about Mike," Hall said.

In the spirit of Benny's sense of humour, the official proclamation included a Top 5 list of reasons to declare Mike Benny Day:

5) Mike loved bacon and a Saturday, March 13 is a great day to eat bacon.

4) Collecting co-hosts is a thing. Mike mentored a total of nine co-hosts, all of whom advanced as broadcasters to bigger markets. Something that he truly celebrated.

3) Mike talked endlessly about his proficiency at World of Tanks.

2) The breakfast sandwich is a food group.

1) And so is beer.

"I had a conversation today with (Benny's wife)  Laurel, and we had a bit of chuckle over this," Hall said. "And, as I reflect back on Mike, it really is some of the things I remember people telling me years and years ago about Mike Benny."

Benny was diagnosed with lung cancer in the fall of 2019 and he died on Feb. 11 at Prince George Rotary Hospice House. He is survived by his wife Laurel and their four children, Claire, Katherine, Colin and Alex.
