Nine-hundred forty-five pounds.
Four-hundred twenty-eight kilograms.
Any way you slice it, that's a lot recyclable matter that's been spared an uncertain future taking up space the Foothills landfill site.
The material was collected this past week at Pine Centre Mall as a Salvation Army project during its inaugural Earth Week celebration.
"We consider this to be a huge success on two levels -- primarily diverting waste from our landfill and, just as important, raising awareness of the recycling efforts," said Salvation Army captain Neil Wilkinson. "One of the added benefits of our extended Earth Day event was the dialogue with the community. We are encouraged to continue and look for viable ways to expand our recycling efforts."
