The Salvation Army in Prince George is faced with an emergency due to the high demand of their food bank services.

On average the local food bank feeds about 6,000 people per month compared to last year's number of 4,383.

"That represents an annual increase from last year alone of almost 20,000 supports," said Bruce Kirk, executive director at the Salvation Army. "And those numbers don't even include school supplies, Christmas Hampers, special meals such as Christmas and Thanksgiving and the many other supports we provide in the way of clothing, furniture, services and household goods."

The Salvation Army has exhausted its resources as the mid-year fundraising Red Shield campaign fell well below its goal.

Members of the community can help by making food donations to the Prince George food bank, volunteer time or donate items to the thrift stores.
