Safety improvements completed at Highway 16 intersection

The intersection at Highway 16 and the Morice River Forest Service Road is now safer as a result of improvements to the configuration and alignment of the intersection.

"These safety improvements will reduce the chances of accidents and injuries at this intersection," says Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad. "The widening of the intersection and the improvements to the turning movements will help protect industrial workers and local commuters."

These upgrades increase mobility and safety for ore trucks, chip trucks and logging trucks hauling Mountain Pine Beetle timber. This $600,000 project was completed with local equipment and operators.

This re-construction widened the intersection to provide increased turning radius in the westbound left-hand turning lane and now provides sufficient room for westbound through traffic to avoid the sweep of turning long loads. A new traffic island was also constructed to help define vehicle movements and reposition lighting fixtures.

The Morice FSR intersection serves as the main exit from Highway 16 to the Canfor Sawmill and the Houston Forest Products sawmill. The intersection also serves the Huckleberry Mine for ore hauling. The new intersection will provide improved safety for industrial traffic, as well as for mill and mine workers traveling to and from work.
