A downtown-area construction site and nearby mall were ribboned off for about an hour Thursday morning as workers dealt with a leaking natural gas line.
A Fortis crew was called to the site adjacent to the Marriott hotel project at 10th and Brunswick shortly after 10 a.m.
Gas whistled into the air for a period until the crew had brought the leak under control.
The mall - Kandola Plaza in the 1000 block of Victoria Street - was reopened by about 11 a.m. and the work was completed by noon.
About a dozen customers were affected. Leak was caused by "third party damage," Fortis spokesperson Travis Wales said and urged anyone planning to dig in an area to use the B.C. OneCall service to find out if there are any lines in the vicinity.
"I think in a case like this, it brings to light the importance of phone before you dig," Wales said.
The service is available online at bconecall.ca and by calling 1-800-474-6886.
