The region's largest breast cancer fundraiser is seeking many hands to make light work.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is looking for volunteers for the 2012 edition of the run taking place Sept. 30 who are willing to make a commitment of two to four hours per week from April to October.

"We are always looking to have new people join the committee, help with new experiences, enthusiasm and energy and new ways of work," said Kim Hodge, volunteer resources manager with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's BC/Yukon

region.

The Run for the Cure is the foundation's signature fundraising event and the largest volunteer-led fundraiser for breast cancer across Canada.

"It's a great experience to have," Hodge said, noting 10 to 15 volunteers are needed for each run committee.

There are a variety of co-ordinator positions available in communication and promotions, community outreach, individual fundraising, site coordination, sponsorship and team fundraising.

"It's completely volunteer-led, especially in sites like Prince George where we don't have an office," she said. Volunteers are supported through different tools, coaching resources and by staff based in Vancouver.

"We are so pleased with the continuous growth of this event and feel it is an incredible opportunity for communities to come together in support of a very important cause," said Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CEO Wendy Slavin.

This year, the BC/Yukon region of the foundation will hold runs in Abbotsford/Fraser Valley, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Vancouver, Vernon, Victoria as well as Prince George.

Last year, more than 560 Prince George participants raised $120, 546 for the cause.

Breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer diagnosed in Canadian women, with an average of 445 diagnosed every week. More than $1.1 million has been raised in Prince George since the run began in 2001.
