With 700 meat pies orders already filled and 300 more pies ready for sale, the ladies of the Canadian Royal Purple are well prepared for their annual Spring Bazaar Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Fort George Recreation Centre.
For more than 50 years, the Prince George Royal Purple have offered up a variety of items during the bazaar to raise funds for local causes involving children and seniors, as is their mandate, and some proceeds also go to the B.C. Family Hearing Resource Society in Surrey as that is a cause the national Royal Purple supports, said Lynda Nolan, secretary of the Prince George Royal Purple and past national president.
To get those 1,000 homemade chicken, beef and turkey meat pies made, there is a committee of 10 dedicated women that work assembly-line style for about three and a half weeks in the Salvation Army kitchen at the Ospika location.
"It's a lot of fun," said Nolan. "We're always ribbing each other and there's lots of laughs as we're rolling dough and mixing the turkey or the chicken or the beef. One lady is making the pie pastry and others are rolling out the dough, someone else fills the pie shell while others put them in labeled bags."
At the bazaar there are more than 25 vendors who have rented tables to sell their wares including items like perogies, jams and jellies and food storage solutions.
There is a silent auction and a raffle with three major prizes including a $500 gas card, $250 Save On food gift card and a portable barbecue. Tickets are $2 each and the draw is on June 27. Lunch is up for offer including two soups, sandwiches, homemade dessert squares, tea and coffee and will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Everyone is welcome to attend the Royal Purple Spring Bazaar at South Fort George Recreation Centre at 1100 LaSalle Ave.
