Prince George mayoral candidate Roy Stewart was the biggest spender in the Prince George 2022 municipal election, according to data reported by Elections BC on Thursday.

The local lawyer spent more than $46,357.91 on his election campaign, and received the highest amount of campaign donations ($32,425) of any candidate. The financial support and spending didn’t result in a win for Stewart, who came in third place behind Mayor Simon Yu and former city councilor Terri McConnachie.

Yu drew the second-highest amount of donations, at $31,803, and spent the full amount.

In the city council race, Coun. Kyle Sampson received $24,912.66 in campaign donations – more than triple his next-nearest competitor, Coun. Tim Bennett, who received $8,162.35 in donations.

Sampson came in third place in the election, behind long-serving city councillors Brian Skakun and Garth Frizzell.

The most frugal campaign was run by city council candidate Colleen Mahoney, who spent just $15 and still had $10 left in her campaign fund. Mahony fell 1,825 votes short of being elected, earning 3,399 votes.

However, the most efficient campaign in the region was run by Regional District of Fraser-Fort George director and new chairperson Lara Beckett, who brought in more than $2,400 in campaign donations despite not facing an opponent in her electoral area (see below).

City council candidate Cameron Stolz had not filed his disclosure statements by the Jan. 13 deadline.

The spending limit for mayoral candidates in the 2022 Prince George municipal election was $55,922.34, while city council candidates were limited to spending $28,297.80.
