The provincial government has awarded a $3.6-million contract to resurface about 30 kilometres of Highway 16 east of Smithers.
Green Roads Recycling Ltd. will start the work in mid-July with the project's completion scheduled for September, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said Thursday.
"Highway 16 is an important corridor for northern B.C. residents and industry alike, particularly as we move ahead with LNG development," said Nechako-Lakes MLA John Rustad.
"This investment will improve safety for residents travelling between Smithers and Houston as well as commercial drivers."
The project is located between Wakefield Road, about 27 km east of Smithers, and the Pleasant Valley Overhead about four km west of Houston.
The resurfacing will be done using the hot-in-place recycling method, where heat is used to soften the asphalt, before it is removed, rejuvenated and then laid back down.
