Road work bumped up

Three road projects have been put on an accelerated path in the Prince George area.

Improvements to Peden Hiil, Highway 16 East and the Saxton Lake Road area are all getting boosts from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure as part of a capital funding injection announced by Premier Christy Clark in September.

"It is great to see these projects accelerated," said Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond. "The projects will make our roads safer and more convenient for drivers."

During her address at the Union of B.C. Municipalities conference, Clark said there would be $207 million worth of spending found in the the pre-existing capital plan for community infrastructure projects.

"These are new projects, not new money," Clark said. "It's money we've saved because we've pinched pennies."

Along Peden Hill, 43 new street lights will be installed to fill gaps in lighting between major intersections. The project is valued at $650,000 with an anticipated completion date of January 2013.

On Highway 16, a $3 million project will design and construct a 1.7-kilometre westbound passing lane beginning at the intersection of Upper Fraser Road, about 22 km east of Prince George. The work, aimed to be finished by the end of next July is for the purpose of increasing safety and mobility along the stretch.

Saxton Lake Road will be improved with better sightlines at the curved sections of the road. Other safety improvements will also be made to other roads in the Saxton Lake and Ness Lake areas including brushing, ditching and widening on various sections. The project is valued at $1 million and due for completion at the end of September 2013.
