About 20 minutes of road chaos, caused by icy conditions, set the scene on Highway 3 near Fernie, B.C. on the morning of Jan. 29.

In a span of about 20 minutes around 10 a.m. RCMP were dealing with three vehicle rollovers and a truck in the ditch quickly followed by an 11-vehicle collision and a fourth vehicle roll over.

The main culprit was an extremely slippery highway, RCMP say.

The investigation revealed several vehicles coming around a slight corner had to brake hard on a slippery section, causing a domino effect resulting in a multi-vehicle pile up.

The highway was closed from both directions until flagging crews could attend to manage the traffic flow.

About 20 people were taken to hospital where they were examined and released with no serious injuries. At this point, charges are not being considered due to the slippery road condition.

Police urge the public to drive cautiously during these winter months when the road conditions are icy and slippery.
