United Way British Columbia is getting $75,000 from Rio Tinto to support efforts towards flood relief after the southern part of the province was recently hit with massive rainstorms.

“For all of us who call BC home, it is heartbreaking to see the devastating impacts of the recent extreme weather events on communities in the Lower Mainland,” Rio Tinto BC Works general manager Affonso Bizon said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all impacted families and communities, and we encourage everyone who can to donate to support a speedy recovery.”

The United for BC Flood Response Fund is a good way for people to offer their support.

“We’re proud that UWBC works with corporations like Rio Tinto to strengthen communities across the province in times of great need,” United Way British Columbia president and CEO Michael McKnight said. “We encourage other companies to come alongside their neighbours and donate available resources and time to those in desperate need today.”

The donation is made through the Rio Tinto Aluminium Canada Fund. Established in 2008, the Fund aims to deliver long-term social and economic benefits for the communities in which Rio Tinto operates, First Nations and the broader society. The Fund invests more than $10 million annually to support programs and initiatives in the fields of education, environment, health and community liveability.
