There's a local motorcycle rider who thinks it's pretty important to Ride For Dad June 18 and Charles Brunette, prostate cancer survivor, wants to get the word out early.
Ride for Dad is an annual fundraiser where motorcyclists raise money through pledges for prostate cancer research and education.
Go to centre court at Pine Centre Mall Friday and Saturday to check out the display the Northern B.C. Chapter of Ride For Dad will have at the motorcycle Show 'n' Shine.
The Ride for Dad will be the first in Prince George but it's the 11th annual fundraiser in Canada.
It took a bit for Brunette and the dozen others sitting on the Ride For Dad board to get organized enough to be an official chapter of Ride for Dad Canada. The Northern B.C. chapter started last October.
"Kinsmen Hall will be party central on June 18," said Brunette. "All the money raised through pledges in Prince George stays in Prince George."
During the Ride for Dad there will be a full day of activities including a police-escorted ride through Prince George, lunch at the Kinsmen Hall and a poker run.
Organizers of the local Ride For Dad are looking for volunteers to help with the event.
One in seven men will be affected by prostate cancer in their life time, making prostate cancer the second leading cause of cancer death amongst men in Canada. This need not be the case as 90 per cent of prostate cancer cases can be successfully dealt with if caught early.
"This is one of those things men just don't talk about," said Brunette. "But we need to get the conversation started."
Participants are encouraged to register in advance at www.motorcycleridefordad.org.
The first 200 registrants get a goodie bag and lunch is free.
