Reuniting in Mackenzie

A group of former graduates of Mackenzie secondary school have issued an invitation to all grads from 1980 to 1989 to gather in the town that was carved out of the forest almost 45 years ago.

A group of former graduates of Mackenzie secondary school have issued an invitation to all grads from 1980 to 1989 to gather in the town that was carved out of the forest almost 45 years ago.

As former residents, the organizing group is alertly aware of the community's struggle with mill closures, failing lumber and pulp markets along with mountain pine beetle devastation.

They see the weekend reunion during Canada Day long-weekend, July 2 & 3 as an opportunity to give back -- "giving at least a short-term boost to the local economy," said organizer Cheryl Fisher.

"With the potential of 500 or more people attending this event, the grads would make use of every service Mackenzie has to offer."

The plan is to host a 1980s-themed event beginning with a grads-only registration and reacquaintance get-together on the evening on July 2.

On July 3, a family barbecue on the MSS sports field will be followed by a tour of the high school itself, and wrap up with a dinner and dance with live music at the curling rink.

To date 95 past grads have confirmed attendance and further 167 are considering attending.

Anyone interested in helping with organizing the event or attending can e-mail Cheryl Fisher at:cheryl_ann_fisher@hotmail.com or Julia Krause at juliajkrause@gmail.com.
