The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is reminding residents that area transfer stations are for small loads of household garbage only after a recent spike in large and prohibited items.
The regional district has noted an increase in things such as furniture and mattresses left behind over recent weeks at places that are designed to receive bagged garbage that fits inside the available bins.
"The challenge is inevitably we end up having to do the clean up," said regional district spokesperson Renee McCloskey, which translates into extra costs. "The solid waste management budget is already $10 million."
While it's not a new problem, staff have noticed it happening more and more frequently recently, McCloskey said.
"There's always a segment of the population that chooses to not dispose of things in a responsible way," she said.
Household garbage is made up of materials such a food and packaging waste, plastics, textiles, and glass. Garbage should be contained in a large garbage bag or a can with a lid for transport to the facility and residents are asked to ensure the bin door is shut and latched to prevent animal entry.
Large items are accepted at the Foothills Boulevard landfill for a small fee. Household loads under 100 kilograms cost $6.
