The Prince George Farmers' Market is challenging locals to "Meet My Market" during the month of July with a goal of getting newcomers out buying local foods from local vendors.

The Meet My Market campaign tasks regular customers to bring a friend for their first market experience for the month of July for a chance to win a prize.

"It promotes local food and entertainment and encourages people to come and bring a friend down to the market to give them that experience," said Randy Stasiuk, president of the Prince George group, of the July promotion organized by BC Association of Farmers' Markets.

Why should they come out to the Sixth Avenue spot?

"It's almost like a social experience," said Stasiuk. "It's almost becoming a one-stop shop in the fact that we have everything from fresh meats and sausages to fresh pasta and local coffee."

While Stasiuk can't say if traffic has picked up because of the promotion, he did say it was a busy Saturday morning with Pride celebrations taking over the downtown core.

"It was very lively. It definitely had a spin-off into the market. You saw the increase in traffic, you saw a lot more families, more tourists into town," he said.

Stasiuk said the year-round market, which happens outdoors until late September or early October, is one of the top tourist attractions in town.

Participants can enter to win at participating markets or use the tag #MeetMyMarket on social media, for a chance to win a three night getaway for two to the Sparkling Hill Resort in the Okanagan.

The event is organized by BC Association of Farmers' Markets, which represents more than 125 farmers markets' across the province.
