Resident input on proposed Queensway apartment extended

Council extended a public hearing on a proposed apartment development at 2690 Queensway until June 12.

The public will have a second chance to have their say to city council, regarding a rezoning to facilitate the development of an apartment on Queensway.

Atpar Developments Ltd. is seeking to rezone 2690 Queensway to facilitate development of an apartment building with up to 55 units on the vacant lot, backing onto the Fraser River. A former application at the site had sought to build an "apartment hotel" offering short-term accomodation, but that has since been changed to a conventional rental apartment building, city director of planning and development Deanna Wasnik said.

During a public hearing on Monday, city council heard from multiple area residents concerned about traffic from the proposed development on Inlander Street and a narrow lane off of Queensway. The city also received letters and emails in opposition to the development.

“The streets in South Fort George are incredibly narrow,” area resident Lorraine Brash said.

Especially during the winter, it is difficult for two vehicles to pass each other in the area, she added.

City council voted to extend the public hearing until the June 12 meeting of city council, to request comment from the city’s solid waste department and fire department about comments on the potential traffic impact on their ability to access the area. Members of the public will have the opportunity to comment on the project at that public hearing.

“I just want to make sure we have all the body of information to make an informed decision,” Coun. Garth Frizzell said.

Councillors Kyle Sampson and Susan Scott opposed extending the public hearing.
