For most of the eight years Donald Trudeau has been renting a house at 4323 Cowart Road, he couldn't ask for anything better.
At $550 per month, the rent is low and his home, nestled beside a grove of trees, was idyllic.
But the seven hectares (17 acres) of land he lives on has been subdivided for a residential development which means his days at the location are numbered.
That's not what's really bothering the 62-year-old however.
Last fall, when the site was logged and the topsoil cleared, the contractor dumped the material on the road into Trudeau's home. He's been able to reach his home by driving over the frozen ground that had been cleared, but that changed about a week-and-a-half ago with it began to thaw.
Trudeau can no longer drive the length without getting stuck and, instead, has been forced to park on a hill behind the property and walk about 200 metres down to his property on two hips that have been surgically replaced.
Added to the hurt, Trudeau built the now-covered road himself after the old access road was closed off because it was crossing a neighbour's property.
Trudeau's landlord, Mike Mesic, gave him two months notice at the start of April meaning he has until June 1 to leave.
Trudeau acknowledged that had he moved when Mesic told him work would begin, he wouldn't be in the predicament. But he also said that as the landlord, Mesic bears some responsibility.
"If he would have asked me to leave two months ago, that would've been fine," Trudeau said. "But in the meantime, what he did was just ridiculous."
Reached for comment, Mesic said conditions will improve once the site has dried out. The contractor also wants the land to firm up before resuming work, he noted.
As of Thursday, equipment was running at the site.
Trudeau said he's also worried he might not be able to move by the June 1 deadline because there is no road in place. In response, Mesic said another access road should be ready by the time Trudeau must vacate the property.
Prince George Fire Rescue deputy chief Blake King said firefighters can get within reach of the home should a fire break out and added the road Trudeau had constructed was too narrow for a fire truck in the first place.
Trudeau also said he is in the process of filing a complaint through the Tenants Resource and Advisory Centre.
