For the second year in a row, Prince George's Relay For Life took top spot as the country's best fundraiser. Also Canada's only 24-hour relay, the city raised more than $519,000 for cancer research after the city's record-breaking $600,000 last year.

A warm and sunny morning welcomed participants to the beginning of the 24 Hr Relay for Life May 9, as cancer survivors and caregivers did the first lap around Masich Place Stadium to start the event.

For the second year in a row, Prince George's Relay For Life took top spot as the country's best fundraiser.

Also Canada's only 24-hour relay, the city raised more than $519,000 for cancer research after the city's record-breaking $600,000 last year.

"It's very exciting," said Helen Owen, team lead for Relay For Life.

"A lot of people have supported this event from far and wide. Just to have this two years in a row is pretty incredible."

Prince George is a community that supports its charities, she said.

"We've all been connected by cancer," she said.

The Relay For Life is the Canadian Cancer Society's largest fundraiser.

The unique nature of the event also helped.

"With us being the only 24-hour really, people have a vested interest. People are really committed," said Owen, noting at any moment, day and night, during you can see thousands on or around the track during the relay.

"It's pretty tiring but you look around the track at all the people... (it) is pretty inspirational."

When she first came to Prince George years ago, she broached the subject of moving to a 12-hour relay like the rest of the cities - more than 300 participated this year.

"I almost got run out of town," she said with a laugh. "Prince George is a unique community."

Prince George is used to rising to the top when it comes to the relay, with second place finishes two years before it claimed first.

This year Terrebonne, Que., was the second-highest fundraiser on the national list after drawing more than $472,000.

The plan is to make next year even bigger and better, Owen said.

"We're not going to sit still. It's about continuing to build."
