The Prince George Relay for Life is the biggest community-based fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society in the nation, raising $600,000 last year.
To help keep that title, the Relay for Life encourages everyone to sign up as individuals or as a team for the 23rd annual May 9 and 10 Allnorth-sponsored event at Masich Place Stadium.
Money raised goes to cancer research and prevention, and to support those living with the disease while the event offers the chance to fight against cancer, celebrate victories against it and honour lost loved ones.
"We encourage anyone who is thinking of participating in the Relay For Life to get registered," said Helen Owen, team lead, Relay For Life. "Time is running short and we don't want anyone to miss out on the experience. The general public is most welcome to also attend the event and see what it is all about."
Organizers encourage each participant to raise at least $150 and for added incentive for every $500 a registered participant raises by May 6 at 4:30 p.m. one entry into a draw for a trip for two to any WestJet destination will be given. Deadline to register is April 24.
This year's Relay for Life theme is Las Vegas, same as it was last year. The slogan is That's How We Roll, Betting It All On A Cure. Participants in the relay should keep the theme in mind when they choose costumes and decorations for their tents. Prizes will be up for grabs for the extra effort
Start time is 10 a.m. May 9 beginning with a victory lap for cancer survivors and caregivers. The biggest change will be the start time of the Luminary Ceremony of remembrance and support, which will be at 10 p.m. instead of midnight May 9 to make it more community inclusive. Luminaries are paper bags with lit candles inside that will line the inside of the track. The stadium lights will be turned off and after a period of silence to remember loved one who lost their battle, those who are currently fighting and those who have won the battle, relayers walk the track with candles in hand. The ceremony is always an emotional highlight. Each participant gets one luminary and additional luminaries can be purchased for $5 with proceeds going towards the Relay for Life.
The most effective way to raise money is to use the Canadian Cancer Society's online fundraising system. There are some interesting ways to fundraise and to get ideas people are invited to visit the local Canadian Cancer Society office at 1100 Alward Street.
