The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George awarded a $3.4 million contract for the construction of a back-up fire dispatch facility in Prince George.

The move is part of a $7.5 million project to relocate the fire operations centre from the current Fire Hall No. 1 downtown to the new firehall under construction on Massey Drive and upgrade the systems to meet new federal requirements. On Thursday, the regional district board of directors voted in favour of awarding the contract to Prince George-based IDL Projects Inc., which had the lowest bid on the project.

"Construction of the Public Safety Operations Building is a required component of the

alternate site development plan," a district report on the matter said. "The Public Safety Operations Building will house the back-up fire dispatch facility, which is required to enable reliable and robust communications for Prince George Fire Rescue and the Regional District fire rescue agencies."

The back up fire dispatch centre will be located at 3790 Opie Cres., near the corner with Ospika Boulevard.

The regional district's 911 and fire dispatch centre provides emergency call taking services and coordinates fire dispatch and communication services for 80 fire departments throughout the region.

Last year the regional district used an alternative approval process to get voter consent to borrow $3 million towards the cost of the project.
