As of Thursday, the city has spent $5.96 million clearing snow from Prince George streets, according to city financial planning manager Kris Dalio.
In February city council approved a $5.041 million snow removal budget. In order to fund snow removal nearly $920,000 has been used from the city's snow removal reserve fund - leaving $664,000 in the reserve to cover all snow clearing operations until Dec. 31 at midnight, Dalio said.
However, if snow clearing costs exceed the city's snow budget and the reserve fund, the city will continue to provide the service out of general operational reserves.
When snow removal costs for a year a less than the amount budgeted by the city, the excess money is allocated to the snow removal reserve for future years. In 2010 the city allocated $1.5 million to the reserve, which had been empty since 2008.
