Prince George RCMP took no chances Saturday evening when they responded to report of someone running with a long gun into an apartment building.

Both the building, located at Foothills Boulevard and 15th Avenue, and the immediate area were cleared - roads and sidewalks in the vicinity were blocked off and a nearby gas station was shut down - as police in numbers converged on the site.

It turned out to be somebody taking his long gun from his vehicle into his building and the weapon was properly secured and locked so no charges will be laid, Cst. Craig Douglass said.

But Douglass said the caller did the right thing by alerting the RCMP.

"The person did nothing wrong in reporting," Douglass said. "It looked suspicious to them so they absolutely should phone us."

As for gun owners, Douglass encouraged them to carry their guns in bags or cases and to handle them in a non-threatening manner.

"Really, somebody has the right to take a gun stored properly and locked properly, to take it from their vehicle to their residence," Douglass said.
