For the third successive year, the Prince George RCMP's Girls' Run for Fun program will be lacing up its shoes and taking to the pavement.
Last year, more than 50 girls registered and over 30 of them completed a five-kilometre challenge race at the end of the seven-week program, hosted by the detachment's victim services and community policing units.
This year's version begins on May 7 and runs until June 29. Over that time, they meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Fort George Park band shell area.
Each session begins with a speaker who will discuss important issues youth are facing including drug and alcohol awareness, social media safety, anti-bullying, gang violence and self-esteem. After the speaker, the girls will break into training groups based on ability.
"Each season we, along with a group of dedicated volunteers, look forward to connecting with the girls and watching their progress," said community policing coordinator Linda Parker. "The girls are challenged but they always have fun."
The program is available free of charge to girls ages 10 to 15 years old.
Registration forms are available at the Prince George RCMP Community Policing office at 575 Brunswick St. or at www.communitypolicing.princegeorge.ca.
