Prince George RCMP had little time to celebrate over the Canada Day long weekend.
The detachment responded to 260 calls for service over Sunday and Monday ranging from noise complaints to alcohol-related incidents to disturbances.
Files of note included arrest of a man suspected of breaking into a 300-block Carney Street home at about 1 p.m. on Monday and then attacking an occupant.
Leif Birch Myltoft, 41, was arrested a short distance away, RCMP said, and has since been charged with break and enter with intent to commit an offence, assault and mischief $5,000 or under.
Myltoft, who police said has had nearly 100 contacts with RCMP this year, remains in custody.
Later the same day, in the Mud River area just west of the city, a general duty officer pulled over a woman suspected of driving a vehicle stolen in Vanderhoof.
Kyla Michelle Brenton, 23, has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and breaching probation. She was released on $500 bail on Tuesday. Also of note:
• A 46-year-old Prince George man is suspected of driving a pickup truck up onto the sidewalk where Queensway turns into Ferry Avenue, striking a pedestrian with a side mirror, then fleeing the scene.
With the help of witnesses, police, who were called to the scene at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, found a suspect who gave two breath samples that were more than double the legal limit for alcohol. He was subsequently issued a 90-day driving prohibition, his truck was seized for evidence and he is to appear in court in September.
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of what appeared to have been minor injuries.
The suspect’s name was not released.
• A weapon, a small amount of drugs and a large amount of cash were seized early Sunday morning after RCMP came across a man prohibited from driving during a road safety check on Highway 16 near Peden Hill.
RCMP said the man tried to evade detection by providing a false name but the ploy failed because one of the officers recognized him. The items were seized during a search for identification, RCMP said.
The suspect, whose name was not provided, was later released, with a court date in September.
• An investigation is continuing and charges are possible after RCMP were called to a possible shots fired incident in the 400 block of Ogilvie Street at about 2 p.m. Saturday.
Officers spoke to the complainant but no evidence of gun shots was found and there were no other reports from the public. But while clearing the home for safety, RCMP said they found a 34-year-old man in possession of a significant quantity of drugs including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin.
• At about 7 p.m. on Sunday, RCMP were called to a report of someone trying to break into a home.
They arrived to find an uncooperative man in a state of panic soaking himself with a hose on the front lawn. Police believe he had been pepper sprayed and called in ambulance personnel to assist.
• Responding to a call of a man suspected of carrying a weapon at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, RCMP found a suspect with a small garden tool sticking out of his pocket that had been mistakenly identified as a handgun.
“Although the man was released, reporting this incident was the right thing to do,” RCMP said. “It is the job of the police to ensure the public is safe.”
