Sixty Canadian Rangers will be practicing survival techniques under the harsh wilderness conditions while in the woods surrounding MacKenzie, from Oct. 25 to 30.

"This is one of many planned training exercises our Rangers undertake to sharpen their endurance and survival skills," said Captain Russ Meades, deputy commanding officer of the 4th Canadian Rangers Patrol Group.

"The Ranger will be under supervision of their instructors throughout and they pose no danger to residents."

Some of the Rangers at the exercise are from the region, along with others from around western Canada.

Ranger expertise include a thorough knowledge of Canada's vast wilderness and coastlines combined with their training as a lightly equipped and self-sufficient mobile force that is ready to deploy on short notice.

"Rangers take their role seriously as key players in the protection and defense of Canadian sovereignty and so, they train regularly to enable them to offer critical support to the Canadian Forces in times of peace and in crisis," said Capt. Meades.

All together, there are about 4,000 Rangers across Canada. The 4th Canadian Rangers Patrol Group is the largest, with about 800 members, and the 600 Junior Canadian Ranger who serve in a similar capacity as cadets in the regular military.
