Raise-A-Reader wrap

The 2010 Raise-a-Reader campaign on Sept. 29 wrapped up on a high note with just over $40,000 raised to help provide the gift of literacy in the Prince George region.

The 2010 Raise-a-Reader campaign on Sept. 29 wrapped up on a high note with just over $40,000 raised to help provide the gift of literacy in the Prince George region.

Alan Ramsay, The Citizen's campaign co-ordinator, explained that more than $7,000 was collected on the streets, exceeding last year by about $3,000.

There were 100 volunteers who canvassed on the streets to exchange a special edition of The Citizen for a donation at 16 city sites.

The bulk of the funds came from a $13,000 allocation by the provincial government, and donations by local sponsors UNBC, McDonald's, Assante Wealth Management, Telus Prince George, local Rotary clubs, Western Financial Group and Jim Pattison Group.

"Together with national sponsors, the 2010 total is just over $40,000 compared to the 2009 total of about $33,000," said Ramsay, who sends along thanks to the volunteers, RAR committee for year-round work, and the sponsors.

"The Citizen is happy to be involved in Raise-a-Reader since part of our mandate is literacy and youth, and this great program fits right in," said Ramsay. "Literacy empowers children and families to lead successful, fulfilling lives."

Now schools and organizations wishing to have literacy projects or programs have until the Oct. 29 deadline to apply for grants. Grant applications can be downloaded at www.princegeorgecitizen.ca under featured links or pick up hard copies at The Citizen front desk.

Last year the funds were distributed among 27 schools and organizations.

Since the program began in Prince George four years ago, it has raised about $155,000 to enhance literacy in the region, Ramsay said.
