Prince George residents grabbing a coffee or a breakfast sandwich Wednesday morning saw dozens of volunteers hawking special editions of The Prince George Citizen newspaper for donations to Raise a Reader in support of literacy programs throughout the city.
Cash donations from 15 different locations in Prince George between 7 and 9 a.m. brought in $6,356.40 while sponsorship from local businesses brought in $4,500 for a total of $10,856.40.
By comparison, Vancouver's Raise a Reader campaign on Wednesday brought in $21,000, with celebrity hawkers including Global TV on-air personalities and past and present Canucks players, further illustrating local generosity.
The presenting partners, the Prince George Public Library and The Citizen, would like to thank all the sponsors, including Telus, CNC, UNBC, McDonald's, The Nechako Rotary Club, The Smokehouse, Friends of the Library and the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group, the wonderful volunteers and Prince George residents for their continued support of family literacy in our community.
