Donors from Prince George and the surrounding area chipped in to the tune of $67,486 for children with special needs.
The city's ninth annual Variety Children's Radiothon was a two-day event hosted by The Wolf 97FM and 94X Wednesday and Thursday.
Generous callers also sponsored 305 Buddy Bears for children at UHNBC and the Child Development Centre of Prince George and District. The bears are used to bring comfort to children waiting for surgical procedures or enduring other stressful experiences.
"The success of the Radiothon is due entirely to everyone who made a donation, held a fundraising event, volunteered to answer the phones or acted as a Variety ambassador - helping to spread the world about the work we do," said Variety executive director Bernice Scholten. "All funds raised in the Prince George area will stay in these communities, and it's wonderful to see local families helping other families. We are honoured to have helped facilitate that."
In addition to the radio stations, the event was sponsored by Canfor, PG Surg-Med, Prince George Citizen, Telus, McDonald's, Canadian Tire, Porter and McMillan, Four Points Sheraton, Budget Car and Truck Rental and numerous volunteers.
The children's charity also wanted to recognize Canfor's Jack Hill, who collected bottles and cans around the city with a goal of raising $1,000. With the help of the community, Phantom Short Haul and the Nechako bottle depot, Hill's total contribution was $1,100.65.
Even the the Radiothon has wrapped up, donations can still be made online at www.variety.bc.ca or by calling 604-320-0505.
