Queen crowned: Northern Capitals’ Kiera Mulder signs with Red Deer College hockey

She was named Captain for paused 2020-21 season

She’s soon to become the new member of the Red Deer College royal family.

Northern Capitals’ Kiera Mulder signed her commitment papers on Monday (Feb. 1) to skate at Canada’s second-highest level of university hockey with the Queens beginning in the 2021-22 season, should COVID-19 allow it.

The 17-year-old defender was named captain of the new Capitals squad amid the ongoing pandemic.

In her combined Under-18 Female AAA career in Prince George thus far, Mulder has tallied two goals and seven assists for nine points, but has been a physical force since day one.

She’s combined for 36 penalty minutes, including 30 a season prior, but also provides a lot of hype and energy off the ice, which led to her captaincy promotion.

“I didn’t think I was going to be getting it, so it was a nice surprise for me to receive that,” the Terrace product told PrinceGeorgeMatters in an earlier interview.

“They announced it in the dressing room, all of us captains and I was the last one to be called [...] It’s a big thing for me. Coming all this way and playing very far from home, it’s me showing off my town, it’s me showing off everybody else that’s moved away; we have a big role on the team even though it’s technically not home for us. It’s a big responsibility for me to have the ‘C’ and I’m very proud to be named the captain.”

In a social media post, Red Deer College says it’s looking forward to seeing Mulder’s ‘leadership’ and ‘tough/hard nosed play’ in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

She becomes the second consecutive captain of the Prince George team to sign with a university hockey team after Paige Outhouse went to Prince Edward Island in U SPORTS play.

Mulder is also one of two current Caps taking the next step in their young careers with Brette Kerley set to join University of Calgary later this year.

Red Deer College will boast two Northern Capitals on its 2021-22 roster with Prince George’s Braxtyn Shawara listed in her second season.

The Queens play in the four-team Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), one step beneath Canada West and U SPORTS.

The Northern Capitals have yet to skate a competitive game in 2020-21 as COVID-19 continues to put hockey on pause under current public health orders, which formally end on Friday (Feb. 5).
