First it was trees and now fish.
Pacific Western Brewery has added salmon to their environmental stewardship initiative. A percentage of sales from their Cariboo line of beer flavours has for years been directed towards forestry replanting. The Forests For Tomorrow campaign has a goal of 1 million seedlings planted by the end of 2020.
Based in Prince George, the PWB operation was founded in 1957 on the shore of the Nechako River near the confluence of the Fraser River. The brewing company is now province-wide with strong ties also to the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. It was in Port Alberni at that community's famed fishing derby that PWB owner Kazuko Komatsu announced a $20,000 fund for salmon enhancement projects in B.C.
"When our representatives visit communities on the coast and along the Fraser and Skeena rivers, they hear a common theme of concern about the pressing need to replenish our precious wild salmon stocks," she said. "Hundreds of tireless volunteers are working hard in B.C. communities to rebuild salmon stocks and rehabilitate streams. PWB wants to help."
She said that "in the weeks and months ahead, the PWB team will be visiting other communities to engage with local salmon enhancement stakeholders."
The PWB Community Foundation will be seeking and adjudicating requests for support this fall.
