Public invited to Mount Milligan mine update session

Thompson Creek Metals is holding an update session on its $1.3-billion Mount Milligan mine for contractors, people looking for work, as well as the general public.

"If you are interested in the potential opportunities the Mount Milligan mine project has to offer our region, you will not want to miss this opportunity," said the company.

The free session begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Coast Inn of the North.

Thompson Creek Metals recently approved a $350 million cost increase in the Mount Milligan gold and copper mine in northern B.C. to $1.265 billion.

The increase is attributable to design improvements, increases in labor costs, and the cost of steel, concrete and other materials, said the company. The cost is also as a result of changes in foreign exchange rates.

The mine, 155 kilometres northwest of Prince George, is under construction now. By the summer, the company expects to have more than 600 workers on the site.

The mine is scheduled to begin production in late 2013.

Thompson Creek, a molybdenum producer which already operates the Endako mine west of Prince George, purchased the Mount Milligan mine last year to diversity into other metal minerals.

The mine -- which provides the first, new industrial jobs in north-central B.C. in more than a decade -- is expected to operate for at least 15 years and provide more than 300 full-time jobs.
