Drivers will soon find a smoother ride on the region's highways as the province announced significant upgrades to highways 5 and 16 on Thursday.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure awarded Green Road Recycling Ltd. a $3.7-million contract to resurface two sections of Highway 5 between Valemount and Avola -- 27 kilometres between Albreda and Valemount and another six km at Messiter Summit -- using hot-in-place recycling.
Work is scheduled to begin this summer and is expected to be completed by this fall.
Contracts for three projects along Highway 16 West were awarded:
- ARC Asphalt Recycling Inc. earned a $2.6-million contract to resurface 24 km starting five km west of Fort Fraser and heading east to Engen, using hot-in-place recycling.
The work is expected to run from mid-May to mid-July.
- Dawson Construction Ltd. was awarded a $3-million contract to use pavement milling to address rutting and cracking of the travelled lanes between Richmond Loop and the Tintagel rest area. It also include shoulder widening up to one metre where possible and 11 km of the highway east of Burns Lake.
The work is expected to start Aug. 2 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of September.
- ARC Asphalt Recycling Inc. was also awarded a $2.5-million contract to resurface 24 km west of Smithers, from Moricetown to Nouch Road, using hot-in-place recycling.
The work is expected to start Aug. 2 and be completed near the end of September.
The contracts were announced Thursday.
