Province funds learning projects

The provincial government is putting $12,500 towards a "place-based learning project" in Mackenzie.

The provincial government is putting $12,500 towards a "place-based learning project" in Mackenzie.

In part, the money will help fund a project that will see the town's high school students and seniors working together to landscape a newly constructed senior housing facility with raised beds, a gazebo, trees and shrubs

A second project involves grades K-12 students creating murals and wooden art to decorate the chain link fences that surround two large empty lots on the main street in the town of 3,700 people 186 kilometres north of Prince George.

The projects' results will also be used in a University of British Columbia research project on how to boost student engagement and improve achievement for rural learners.

The funding was announced Thursday.
