Some of the property owners targeted by recent clean-up orders by the city are asking for more time.

Commonwealth Campus Corporation's Dan McLaren is asking to have until the end of October to finish the work required on 231-233 George St.

At the end of June, city council approved the order to have the long-vacant and boarded up laundromat knocked down and the property cleaned by Aug. 3. Since then, the city has hired a utility locating company to determine if there are any underground tanks on the property or in the adjacent alley.

It also hired an environmental consultant to review the hazardous material in the building.

According to a letter to the city from McLaren's lawyers, part of the delay is that McLaren is out of town, but a demolition permit application is in the works as is finding a contractor to carry out the remediation work.

The letter to the city also asks that it take into consideration Commonwealth bought the property in 2010 "even though it wasn't in Commonwealth's best financial interests, to secure housing for those individuals who were being displaced as a result of the closing of the Prince George Hotel. As you know the city of Prince George ultimately purchased such property."

Monday was the deadline for work to be finished at the Lombardy Mobile Home Park, but it's still underway and on July 19, the property manager asked for council to reconsider.

City staff inspected the Norwood Street property on Tuesday and of the 33 lots reviewed, more than half still need work to be considered in compliance.

City council will consider the requests on Monday night.

It can refuse extension or reconsideration or choose to cancel or change the original order.
