B.C. Liberal candidate Kevin Falcon says he wants to see First Nations become participants in the growing economy, but warned that natural resources projects will not be blocked because they don't have universal support.
"The greatest way you build allies is by demonstrating to First Nations how the rewards of growing economy can directly benefit their future and their children's future in a positive way," Falcon said in an interview Tuesday in Prince George.
Falcon took in the early part of the B.C. Natural Resource Forum and then met with potential supporters during the remainder of his day.
Responding to a question about one of the themes of the forum on building partnerships with First Nations, Falcon said his position as premier would be clear.
He said he would engage meaningfully with First Nations and ensure appropriate accommodation, but because one group does not support a project doesn't meant the project won't go ahead.
"We have to be able to move forward. And that is in the interest of First Nations and the rest of the population of British Columbia," he said.
Falcon said he has already learned that people in northern B.C. have ideas on how to improve the system so meaningful consultation can take place with First Nations. He said he's open to listening to more ideas.
Falcon said it's also important to find a way to tap into the growing aboriginal youth population to feed the need for workers.
Falcon was not in Prince George to announce any new policies as part of the leadership campaign which will be decided on Feb. 26.
Falcon had earlier rolled out a northern prosperity agenda, in which he promised to establish a regional premier's office in Prince George.
The regional premier's office, which cabinet ministers would also be expected to use, is meant as a base for interacting with people in northern B.C.
As part of his northern strategy, Falcon has also said he wants to create a new northern transportation corridor strategy that would build on efforts already underway to make Prince George an international road, rail and air intermodal hub.
Falcon has not pegged a dollar figure to his northern strategy.
