Probe continues into crash involving police office

The four people injured by a downtown collision on Sunday evening are all out of the hospital. One of them was an on-duty police officer on his way to a routine call for service. The preliminary investigation suggests he proceeded through the intersection despite a red light, with the police vehicle's lights and sirens not engaged.

He was driving a marked RCMP sport-utility vehicle northbound when he collided with a Honda Civic containing three people driving eastbound. All three in the Civic were seriously injured.

"They are all doing better now. Some have been released from the hospital and we have been able to talk with them about what happened," said North District Traffic Services Staff Sgt. Pat McTiernan.

It has been confirmed since Monday that all four people involved were wearing seatbelts, alcohol was not a factor, nor was speed.

Both vehicles have been written off due to the amount of damage. The police SUV was valued at about $26,000 while the Civic was estimated at $8,500.

"The police member involved remains on duty, however he did sustain some injuries so he is listed as on medical leave right now, but his watch is off on their regular four days off as part of their duty rotation so we will have a better sense in four days as to whether he can resume regular police activities," said McTiernan.

The investigation has a long way to go, McTiernan added. He confirmed that Mounties spent Monday canvassing the neighbourhood around the crash - 4th Avenue and Winnipeg Street - and had spoken to every known witness, but if anyone had yet to talk to investigators about anything they saw or heard, that opportunity was still open.

Scientific calculations and data analysis was still underway on a number of angles. It was not known how long these would take.
