Prince George experienced a slightly wetter and warmer than average December.
Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says the mean temperature for the month was -4.4 C and the normal is -7.2 C.
“Even though it was a difference of almost three degrees, it still only ranked as the 19th warmest December on record,” Sekhon tells PrinceGeorgeMatters. “It certainly wasn’t in the top 10, even though it was quite warm.”
The total precipitation for the month was about 50 ml, which is above the normal average 43.9 ml.
“We had a fairly mild month, especially the middle of the month was quite mild and the snow didn’t get going to a little bit later,” says Sekhon.
He says the seasonal forecast is also predicting above-normal temperatures for the Prince George area in the coming months.
“It’s looking like a weak El Niño pattern this winter, and what that usually means is that starting about now into the new year until the spring, you are going to see warmer than normal temperatures for that time frame.”
However, Sekhon adds we may still experience cooler weather events like an arctic outbreak or a heavy snowfall.
“But the general forecast is over the next couple months, we are going to be slightly warmer than normal in Prince George.”
