Two Prince George resources are working together to clean-up the downtown core.

The City of Prince George and the POUNDS Project Society have started covering up graffiti on private properties downtown, which they will continue to do for the next three months.

POUNDS is also going door-to-door to downtown businesses offering removal and covering services to property owners.

Downtown Prince George and the POUNDS Project Society have also worked together to come up with a plan for those that need the services the most.

Business operators who would like these free services are asked to dial the City Service Centre at 3-1-1 or email 311@princegeorge.ca.

POUNDS has also been contracted by the city to monitor the bathrooms that are in the Canada Games Plaza across from the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre.

The washrooms opened in April to help those access bathrooms impacted by the closure of businesses and civic facilities due to COVID-19.

"These are just the most recently announced City operations aimed at improving health and well-being in the city," The city says in a news release.

"The City of Prince George is working with its partners on a number of new COVID-19-related initiatives aimed at improving safety, cleanliness, and inclusion for all residents."

There are also crews with Prince George Fire and Rescue Services that continue to do daily downtown alley patrols. Members patrol the downtown area two times a day (mid-morning and evening).

The alleys monitored are from First to Sixth Avenue and from Victoria Street to Lower Patricia Boulevard.

When the patrols take place, members look for accumulations of combustible material that presents the risk of fire. They report any suspicious activity to Prince George RCMP

Downtown sidewalks and alleyways were recently flushed to help remove debris, refuse including medical sharps and other materials.

During last weeks cleaning, the city says roughly two cubic metres of material was removed.

Streets and Avenues included:

  • Third Avenue flushed down both sides of the street from Victoria to Queensway
  • George Street from First Avenue to Fire Hall #1 on Seventh Avenue
  • The west side of Dominion Street from First Avenue to Second Avenue
  • Second Avenue from Dominion Street to Quebec Street
  • Alleyways between George Street and Dominion Street from Third to Second Avenue

The city says these areas were recommended by Bylaw Services staff as needing special attention.
